This is a blog by William Knight about a students life at Unity College. It will explain about the college from a students eyes because they are the ones who actually live it. Feel free to check in often and leave messages and ask questions. Have a great day.
Hi William,
I had a couple of questions. I just finished applying for Unity and am a little nervous about getting in because I am a transfer student. I have a 3.9 GPA and a good record but I am having a hard time gauging how difficult it is to get into Unity. Do you know what factors admissions would look upon favorable, like volunteer work or extracurricular activities. Also, how much financial aid is available for middle class students who can’t afford 30,000 thousand a year but are not in a super low income bracket?
Hey, those are really good questions. It sounds like you have a very nice academic standing, so I wouldn’t worry about that aspect of your application. In my opinion, Unity likes to find well rounded people, so it isn’t necesarilly what you are doing but how passionate you are about your activities. As for financial aid, there is a page on our website if your interested. Also we have scholarships for people with good academic standing that you would fit into, as well as grants and other aiding factors. Over 90% of Unity students get financial assistance, you would have to talk to our financial aid director in order to get a precise estimate in your particular case.
Uh hi. I’m looking at schools right now for Fall 2011 [I know, kind of far away] and Unity has caught my eye. I’ve been looking at schools a lot the past few weeks [my summer job is...slow] and I kept coming back to this one. There’s one thing I can’t seem to find, though, and that’s about on campus living. Are there places to live on campus? If so, are they just like regular dorms?
Hey, it’s great to see that your looking ahead to college already. There are 5 residence halls on campus. Westview, Wood Hall and Eastview are built like your typical dormitory with a long hallway and two person rooms. The bathrooms are communal with one mens and one womans on each floor. Westview is chem free so even if you are 21 you cannot drink. Woodhall has an all girls and an all guys floor but besides that there are no restrictions in the other dorms. Maplewood is the quietest dorm, it is much newer (2007) and Cianchette is the dorm most upperclassmen apply for. It is set up in a suite style so that the rooms are around the common area where there is a tv, computer and kitchen area. Also cianchette has a bathroom inbetween every two rooms so that you only have to share it with 4 people total. IF you have any other questions feel free to ask.
I’ve heard about the vegetarian and vegan meals that Unity serves. I am not vegetarian or vegan; do they serve meat?
Hey, sorry it took me so long to get back to you, I just started again for the year so my responses will be quicker from here on out. Im not vegetarian or vegan either, but we definitely do have meat options. There is normally burgers, pizza, hotdogs, and then a few meat entrees like steak, chicken, pot roast, pork chops or a variety of other options. There is a large variety and I’ve never had trouble finding something good to eat.
Hey, I was just wondering…what are the requirements for getting accepted at Unity? (Example: how many credits, what classes are good to have under your belt, etc.)
Are you a college transfer or a highschool student?
Hi Billy,
We were at the Open House on Saturday and was very impressed!!!! Our son’s name is Ethan and he is a junior this year and is very excited about Unity. He liked the small class story – he has a learning disability and was very concerned about big classes and no help with homework – you eased his mind in many ways. Thanks for the great tour – good luck – maybe we will see you this Spring – he wants to come back to the Spring Open House.
Michelle “mom”
Thanks, we are always happy to hear positive feedback for our outreach events. If you have any more questions that I can help you with feel free to ask.
Billy
Hey Will, I just wanted to know what the dorms are like? Big? Small? Always hot/cold? Nice or old and beaten up?
Thanks!
Hey, the dorms are pretty nice in my opinion. There are 5 different residence halls on campus. Those are Westview, Eastview, Wood Hall, Maplewood and Cianchette. Westview, Eastview and Wood Hall are primarily underclassmen dorms. They are designed in your typical college dorm format where it is one long hall, about 20 rooms per floor, a common room and community bathrooms, etc. The rooms are a good size and the maintenance staff does a great job at keeping the furniture and the rooms in good shape. Maplewood was built in 2007 so it is still quite new and tends to be really quiet simply due to its design. Cianchette is my personal favorite; it is built in a suite style. This meaning the rooms go around the common room, and you only share your bathroom with the room next to you. If you want to see what some of the buildings look like from the outside, go to this link http://www.unity.edu/Admissions/Visiting/SelfGuidedCampusTour.aspx
Also, you can always email me at wknight07@unity.edu and I can send you some pictures of my friend’s rooms in different residence halls around campus to give you a better idea of what is in store. But as a general rule, I do not hear many complaints about the rooms.
